Chiang Mai Travel Tips: Transportation, Food, and Local Hacks
Here are some Chiang Mai travel tips and insider hacks based on my own experience that can make your stay smoother, cheaper, and even more fun:
🚘 Transportation in Chiang Mai:
-
inDrive is a game-changer
Forget overpriced taxis—inDrive was my go-to ride-hailing app in Chiang Mai. It’s budget-friendly, easy to use, and great for quick city rides or day tours. Expect to pay around 100–250 THB depending on the distance and time of day.
-
Walking is therapy
Chiang Mai is a walkable city, especially around the Old Town. Strolling through its streets gives you access to temples, local eateries, cafes, and hidden spots that vehicles would easily miss. Just don’t forget comfy shoes!
Tuk-tuks are fun (but negotiate!)
For the classic Thai transport experience, try a tuk-tuk ride! These three-wheeled vehicles are perfect for short distances and give you that exciting, breezy ride through the city streets.
TIP: Tuk-tuk drivers don’t go by the meter, so negotiate the price before hopping in. Expect to pay around 80–150 THB depending on the distance and time of day.
🛍️ Food + Essentials:
-
7-Eleven is your best friend.
From quick snacks to water bottles, cold drinks, or even midnight meals, 7/11 is a life-saver. There’s one on almost every street, and they’re always stocked with affordable food in Chiang Mai.
-
Night markets = budget feasts + cultural experience.
One of the best ways to experience local Thai culture is through Chiang Mai’s vibrant night markets. Whether you’re hungry for Chiang Mai street food, looking for handcrafted souvenirs, or just strolling to enjoy the energy of the city at night—these markets are a must:
